[Voiceover]
To combat this, hydraulic fluid must provide excellent oxidation resistance, thermal stability, and wear protection.

Greases
Title: What to expect when choosing a grease?
Duration: 2:24
Description: Global film created to visually examine what makes a good quality grease, the importance of choosing the right grease for the application, temperature and operating environment of machinery; and the need to regularly check and reapply across the Driveline sectors (Agriculture, Construction and Fleet).
[Background music plays]
A gentle pulsing instrumental begins to play.
[Voiceover]
Whether it’s on or off-highway, seasonal changes can make equipment maintenance seem like an unpredictable job.
[Animated sequence]
Wide shot over a heavily stylised Shell Vehicle Testing Centre. Several vehicles and personnel are going about their business, creating the impression of a busy hub of activity.
[Voiceover]
Between freezing temperatures and dusty conditions, harsh operating environments can expose components to potentially disastrous levels of damage and stress.
[Animated sequence]
Switch to a view of a large video monitor. Video of machines at work in harsh snowy and dusty conditions plays. Transition to a screen outside a testing chamber showing an animated graphic indicating a ‘mud’ stress test is underway.
[Voiceover]
In turn, equipment managers can feel under pressure to keep machinery online and in condition, with the threat of downtime seemingly looming around every turn.
[Animated sequence]
Transition to an overhead view of the test chamber containing a lorry in a pool of mud. Transition to a screen featuring a parts pass/fail test. A transmission part fails and an engine part passes the test.
[Voiceover]
While greases may only make up a small percentage of overall maintenance budget, they play a large role in keeping equipment running effectively and efficiently.
[Animated sequence]
Transition to a shot of a monitor featuring an annual lubricant expenditure pie chart animating into place. Transition to a shot of an engineer working at a screen featuring machine parts undergoing lubricant related performance analysis routines.
[Voiceover]
Selecting the right, high-quality grease is therefore a critical first step towards maximising performance and minimising costs.
But a “one size fits all” approach is not appropriate when making a decision about grease.
[Animated sequence]
Transition to a shot panning down two monitor screens, with the first screen featuring an animated graphics sequence depicting a ‘lubricant selection’ process. The second screen features a chart showing projected cost/performance benefits for the selected oils.

Equipment operating in any sector – from fleet to agriculture to construction – demands various considerations including contamination, temperature, speed and pressure to name just a few.
If in doubt, follow these five simple steps:
One – Consider the effects of the operating conditions.
[Animated sequence]
Transition to a shot featuring two monitors side by side. On the first screen video plays back featuring vehicles from Fleet, Agriculture and Construction arenas. The second features an animated sequence highlighting the choice of operating conditions.
[Voiceover]
Two – Choose the right base oil type and viscosity as this will impact the durability of your equipment as well as grease life.
[Animated sequence]
Transition to an engineer working in front of a single monitor featuring a graphic sequence showing a viscosity selection process for a number of different vehicles.
[Voiceover]
Three – Select the right thickener based on temperature range, load-carrying ability, shear stability and pumpability especially at low temperatures.
[Animated sequence]
Transition to different screen featuring a graphic sequence showing a thickener selection process.
[Voiceover]
Four – Decide on the additives needed based on the additional qualities they can provide.
[Animated sequence]
Transition to a laptop screen with the testing area in view behind it. On the screen an additive selection process animates in to place.
[Voiceover]
Five – Choose the right NLGI class. A low NLGI class for low-speed applications including gears or centralised lubrication systems or a high NLGI class for high-speed applications such as electric motor or pumps.
[Animated sequence]
Transition to a different monitor featuring an animated NLGI Class selection routine.
[Voiceover]
Since daily demands can make operations unpredictable, equipment managers need expert partners they can rely on to help bridge the gaps caused by stretched resources and limited time.
